Dokkum to Leeurwarden

Johan our host in Dokkum had made us a great breakfast.

We have stayed at 5 Friends op de Fiets this past week and have met some great people. Johan and Thea’s old canal house in Dokkum was our favorite.

Getting our bags packed up in Dokkum. Our last cycle day. 🙁

We started our trip out of Dokkum on Altena Street.

The Poosthorn hotel in Dokkum. We stayed here in 2014. With the nice weather now starting there were many out enjoying the patio.
We stopped at a nice cafe in Burdaard where we could watch the boats go through.
Burdaard. Lekker coffee and lekker apple pie.
Bart trying to find out what the noise was that we listened to all week.

All week we heard an animal that makes like a laughing noise. We thought it was ducks protecting their young. But Bart finally figured it out after 6 days. They are frogs!!

Chat told me….”yes, a lot of frogs in the Netherlands really sound like they are laughing, chuckling or making a funny ha-ha noises at night.”

Love!

The 11 cities fountain in Leeuwarden is called LOVE It was designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. It is 2 huge white children’s heads facing each other with mist or breath flowing between them. His artwork symbolizes dreams, connection and the future.

It is right near the train station. We obviously walked almost right by without seeing it when we first arrived. But we made sure to see it when we came back.

We finished the Elfstedentocht 11 city route in Friesland. Yay!!

250 km we cycled over the last 7 days.

Would I recommend it…..YES!

It was a great way to see a great province Friesland up close and personal.

The bike rental was a family run business right near the train station and was perfect. FietsStation058.

There is me sitting enjoying a beer on the patio across from the train station.

All our boys are meeting us today for the second part of our holiday – 9 nights travelling through Friesland, Drenthe and then our last 3 nights in Amsterdam. Brent and Rachel and Adam and Madeline came from London, England where they spent 3 nights, Cameron came from Germany where he spent 5 nights and Phil came from Toronto.

Brent and Rachel are the first to arrive. First thing – Bitterballen.

Bart and I ate quite a few tosties over the last week. This is a grill cheese the Dutch way. We had it with ham, cheese, pesto, chicken, onion, etc. you can put anything you want in a tosti. They even sell special sized bread for tosties and perfect size cheese slices.

Brent and I took a taxi to pick up our mini- bus. It fits all 8 of us and our luggage.

Brent and Cam got their international licenses and will be our drivers for the week. We needed a vehicle for Friesland and Drenthe as we are going places where we can’t get a train or a bus. We rented from Gill in Leeuwarden since they had a 9 passenger automatic.

The gang is all here.

Cameron arrived direct to Hindeloopen by train around 8 pm. Cheers to the start of our Netherlands vacation. We have a very nice AirBnB right in the marina in Hindeloopen. It is perfect as it has 4 bedrooms, outside space, full kitchen, etc. and it is on the Water – the Isjelmeer.
