Stavoren to Workum, Friesland, Netherlands

What a great place we had in Stavoren and too bad we couldn’t stay longer. Well it looked liked we were in for some heavy rain and Thea the owner of the place said we could stay longer and wait out the rain, since she had no one coming in that day. We left around 11:30 am. We first stopped at the grocery store to pick up some goodies – wine, suikerbrood (sugar bread), droopies (black salted licorce), all the good stuff!

The old bank -where we stayed – good bye Stavoren!
Suikerbrood

Suikerbrood, or sukerbole (as Frisians call it), is strongly linked to Friesland. It is a rich sweet bread made with chunks of sugar and often cinnamon. The sugar partly melts when baking, creating carmalized pockets inside. They serve it sliced thick with butter, usually with coffee or tea. My mother-in-law made it every Christmas for a Boxing Day gathering. I remember eating a big dinner around 2 pm, and then having home-made Sukerbole around 6 pm with coffee/tea. I have a few recipes but have never made it yet. But I plan to when I get back to Canada. I rarely eat bread at home during the week, but over the last 4 days I have ate so much bread!!! It sure is lekker but I am going to have to cycle a lot more to work it all off! Lol.

We cycle through Molkwerum!

The last time my husband was in Molkwerum was in 2014. When we got to the middle of the small village, he said I think my Pake’s (grandfather) house is right down this ally. And sure enough it was. We found it. My mother-in-law was born and grew up in Molkwerum. So it is always great to visit where your roots are from.

Hindeloopen

I have been to Hindeloopen twice before and I love it. It is right on the Isjelmeer Lake. We will be staying for 3 nights in Hindeloopen later this week when we meet up with our kids. So you will see more of Hindeloopen when I blog then. We have a house right on the marina on the water.

We arrive in Workum

We met my cousin Jan and Monique in Workum for lunch. We met at Folkert’s restaurant. For them it was about an hour drive. Good thing Jan made a reservation as it was busy. It was great spending some time with family. His Mom, my Tante Johanna recently passed away. 🙁 and he brought a few mementos from her and the programs from her memory of life. ❤️.

I had their local beer!
My yummy lunch! Us Sikkens stuck together – Jan had the same thing. carpaccio sandwich, croquette sandwich and mustard soup! Lekker!!

The four of us went into the Jopie Huisman museum. Wow a spectacular painter. He was known for his meticulous and realistic paintings. The detail in his paintings are almost unbelievable. How can he paint with such detail. So many look like photographs. He refused to sell any of his paintings in 1986 he opened up his own museum. He passed away in 2000, but left behind a building displaying spectacular art.

Jopie Huisman
He often painted old, worn objects because he felt they carried the life and story of the people who used them. His paintings of patched trousers, shows and they were meant to show dignity, hardship, and humanity in ordinary things.
We stayed in for dinner as it was rainy and we were tired. Our dinner!

We cycled 24 km today from Stavoren to Workum. It was a great day. It was super that we could meet up with some family from Netherlands 🙂

It was a another chilly day. But I hear the weather is going to get better.
