Sneek to Stavoren, Friesland Netherlands

Dining room at are Friends op de Fiets Tineke and Ale. I love their very old Dutch tablecloth. I have been looking for a large one for years but difficult to find.

Sneek was a very nice City. We could have spent more time exploring the city, but we only have so much time in each city we stay in. But we do get to see so much of the country when cycling, which is great.

Sneek

It started to rain in the morning so we stayed and had another coffee before heading out. We first cycled into the city centre to see the famous waterpoort and the fountain.

Iljjst

Iljst is one of the 11 cities of the Elfstedentocht. This was just coming into the City. They had a working windmill that made planks and beams of wood – like a sawmill I guess you can say.

There are so many lift bridges in Friesland. Most we saw are run by one person, sitting in the booth and mechanically putting it up and down as the boats came through. I would imagine that could be a long day all by yourself, but at least you would have a nice view all day. It is Sunday today so there are more boats out I think than normal.

Woudsend

We came through Woudsend Friesland. We stopped here for a break as we saw a nice public bathroom and a bench. We had packed a bun with meat and cheese from our breakfast. And we had some Dutch goodies with us too.

Wousend was a small town. This is one of 2 windmills in town and they were both working. One was pumping water and the other, I am not sure.
Wousend
Woudsend – the church was open so we popped in to check it out. This church was from 1792.
Give us our daily bread. Btw – we are eating a lot of bread in the Netherlands!!! So I am eating more than I should in a day!
The church had very beautiful stain glass windows. Cows and sheep. We have seen and heard and smelled a lot of both of them in our cycles so far.
Woudsend.
They were pumping water from the canal into this huge tube that had holes on the top – to water the field. Cool system.
Harich, Friesland – from 1633

When you are cycling from town to town, you always see the church steeples, and then the route always seems to take us by them. We like checking them out – if they are open we will go in, check out the old tombstones, so you may be seeing lots of pics of churches. Although there are so many that all look the same, so sometimes we just cycle by and wave.

A typical farm in Friesland – the house and barn are attached.

We were riding on the dijk along side the Isjelmeer. The Isjelmeer Lake used to be part of the North Sea, but when they built the longest dijk in the world – the Afsluitdijk – it got separated from the sea and is now a lake. The other side of the Afsluitdijk is called the Wadden Sea, which is the water between Friesland and the Frisian islands. On the other side of the Frisian islands is the North Sea. It was very windy cycling along this stretch. And there were so many sheep and cows.

On the IJsselmeer. Chilly day!
Klokkenstoel in Mirns. It was a bell in a church tower that was destroyed in World War 2 in 1943. They saved the bell and put it in this Klokkenstoel. There are about 75 of these in Netherlands, and 56 of them are in Friesland. We rang it and it was sooooo LOUD!!
We cycled 53 km today! It was very chilly about 11 degrees, no sun, and very windy. But at the end of the day, we were smiling! And we were thankful there was no rain.

Our room in Stavoren

We stayed in the old bank. De Kluiskaemer in de Olde Banck. Thea our host was great. She gave us a tour. She has so much property in the back (it used to be a farmers field) with many secret gardens. When you stay, you can enjoy it all. A beach eventually at the very back by the canal, and then a boat, a campfire. Our room was very nice with small kitchenette and a very unique shower/stone bath. If you ever want to stay in Stavoren, let me know I and I will give you Thea’s contact info.

This is the original door to the bank safe – very heavy!
On the other side of the safe door was this massive stone bath. It was about 8 feet long. It took about 40 minutes to fill. It sure was lovely after a chilly day of cycling.
The street where we stayed in Stavoren
The Plus supermarket was a man made island. So boats could stop and shop too.
The choice of Honig products is like 500+ more than we have in Canada.
Visserman

We went to the De Visserman restaurant near the marina. Thea our host recommended it. We really enjoyed our meal. The restaurant has been here a very long time, and is in a building that dates back to 1777.

I had the catch of the day – straight from the sea into my belly!!! Delicious +++ Bart had tandoori sea bass that was lekker too
The Stavoren fountain was a cool one!
Stavoren
The legend of the Women of Stavoren tells of a rich, arrogant widow who threw away a shipload of grain because she thought it was worthless, only to lose her fortune and see her city decline afterward.
Stavoren, just down from where we stayed

A great day! Once again, we wish we could have stayed longer in Stavoren. We will have to come back!

Yes so much. You will have to come back with me one day to Stavoren since you only cycled through when you were there. Thea’s place is a perfect place to stay.
