Whistler BC Day 2

Sunshine again!! It is going to be a gorgeous day in the Mountains.

Blackcombe Mountain!

We had picked up a few groceries so we could have breakfast in our condo. Way better and way more reasonable! They have a few nice grocery stores right here in the village just a short walk away, and BC liquor is right near it too. Everything is very convenient when you get a place a place right in Whistler. If we didn’t take Janet’s car, we could have taken a bus from Vancouver for $44 each. If you don’t want to do any stops on the way, it is a great way to get here since once here you do not need a vehicle.

They are in between seasons. They only have 2 mountains here – Whistler and Blackcombe. They only have Blackcombe open this week, since they are closing Whistler down for skiing and getting it ready for summer tourists. The peak-to-peak which takes a gondola from the top of Whistler to the top of Blackcombe is also closed. Too bad! We were hoping to go up one mountain, take the peak-to-peak and then come down the other mountain.

Going up the mountain is fairly $$ but if you are in Whistler it is a must!! We paid about $115 per person. So we went up Blackcombe and came back down Blackcombe. The gondola takes almost 20 minutes. When you get half way you think that is the top, but then you continue to go up. Typically you can’t see the other part of the mountain as it is further back and/or in the clouds. Today was a gorgeous day so the views were spectacular. The temperature in the village was about 12 degrees, and up at the top it was 5.6 degrees, and .6 with the wind chill. I was glad I brought my winter hat!

Only in Whistler….ski in the morning and then golf in the afternoon!

So many skiers still up at the top and must of the runs up at the top are still open. They also have Heli-skiing still, where you get dropped off by Helicopter and ski some nice powdery slopes – I looked it up and I think it is like $1,500+ for 3 runs, or there are places where you can go up and get a private lodge and unlimited skiiing. I can imagine that this would be pretty epic for big time skiiers! I would be too scared as I would probably drop off the side or hit a tree!

Margaret had put a pack of cards in our care package, and last minute this morning I threw them in my backpack. Good idea!! We played guys against the girls euchre up in the chalet while enjoying the views from the top. We ended up tie – 2 vs 2, so will have to finish best 3 out of 5 later this evening.

The perfect thing to do at the top of the mountain!
Debbie’s view from the window!

We sat on the patio at Amsterdam Cafe Pub. We saw the signs for Gaper Day, so we googled it and asked the waitress about it. On the last day of skiing for the season – Holiday Monday May 19th, 2025. It is a mountain tradition. It’s a day for skiers and snowboarders to embrace a playful, often outrageous, attitude on the slopes, often involving costumes, unconventional gear, and a general sense of fun. Sounds like fun…..but she said it is crazy busy in Whistler on that weekend/day!

At the Amsterdam! Hank singing to the good tunes!! I think this one was Tina Turner singing Proud Mary!
View from the patio at the Amsterdam Bar!
My first time having COWS ice cream. I didn’t realize there are so few in Canada – PEI, Halifax, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Whistler, and Calgary I think. They had some pretty cool flavours!

We stopped to pick up groceries and wine on our way back. We stayed in and Hank, Debbie, and Bart made pasta with salad and garlic bread. Very yummy!!

Debbie and I sat out on our patio and enjoyed the nice Backyard 2020 Meritage Reserve I got from Hank! Lekker (Dutch for Yum)! We later finished up our euchre game, and dang us girls lost!! We will be back at it the rest of the week.

Cheers to another great day!! Sad to be leaving Whistler tomorrow, but off to more fun adventures!!
