June 21 & 22, 2024 – Road Trip to the East Coast starts!!!

We got out of Hamilton June 21st by 3 p.m. Yay 2 weeks of vacation. East Coast Canada – here we come!!!

We stopped at the Big Apple near Cobourg, Ontario on the way. I hear it is the place to go when you come through, and it was supper time and we thought we better get something while we can. Wow there were so many buses and school kids there. Busy busy! and noisy noisy! We got some food and we bought some cheese apple bread to take along with us.

We arrived in Mallorytown by 7:45 pm. We had a little cabin (shack – lol) booked at Happy Green Acres campground. Honestly…..it was exactly what we needed for a quick stop over. My sister Debbie recommended it as they stayed there for a stop over coming back from Gaspe last year. It is a private trailer park 3 km off the 401, and very close to the St. Lawrence River. We had hydro, we had showers/bathrooms 50 feet away. And we had neighbours vey close to us!!! The park is popular for their music weekends which they hold about 5 or 6 times a season, and it sounds like a fun time so maybe we will have to come back some time! We had a good sleep and we were happy to not have to set up our tent for the first night, since we both worked all day and by the time we go here we just wanted to relax, and enjoy a nice glass of wine.

Gives you the idea how close we were to our neighbours. I am sure if we farted in bed they would have heard! lol

First night and I kicked over my wine glass (that I had just filled) and spilled wine all over my bedding……dang!! the bedding has to last me 16 nights! LOL. To be honest…..I was more upset about the wasted wine, then the dirtied blankets! haha…

The Arena where they have their stage for musicians. Check out their music weekends coming up this summer. Fun times. I would imagine that many of the seasonal campers have boats on the St. Lawrence river which is only 3 kms down the road.
Cookshire, Quebec we pulled over to find this covered bridge, that was built in 1868. In its day it would have been functioning as a road, but now it is a site to visit, which it looks like trails continue as you walk through.
We spent most of today driving through Quebec. So beautiful driving through the mountains. We were so happy to take the route we did so that we could by-pass Montreal and the business. We drove over 500 kms today over 5 1/2 hours, but it didn’t feel as long since there was always some beauty to see. Driving through parts of it reminded me of driving through Algonquin Park, but with 95 % less traffic. There were lots of motor bikers around, as it seems like appealing travel roads for them. When we were at the restaurant tonight….there must have been 30+ bikers lined up in the parking lot.
The Forks area, Maine
Sugarloaf Mountain, Carrabasset Valley. This is the view from our room at Sugarloaf Inn.
Bart and I were belly laughing so hard when we were sitting on the balcony, and then he bumped my phone and off it went off the balcony. oh oh….
I had a feeling I was going to have to go into the nearest town tomorrow for a new phone…..but it survived the drop. phew!!
View from our room! So….what we were laughing about was…About 45 minutes before the US border Bart and I switched driving, as he didn’t want to go through customs and answer all the questions. So when we came to the Quebec/Maine border…..the border guard was on the passenger side. bahahahahahaha!!!!
It would look so different here in the winter….and it would be booming with so many skiers/snowboarders. We are 1 of 6 people staying in the Inn tonight.
We hiked up the hill to get to the village where we went for dinner to the Sugarloaf Hotel 45 North Restaurant.

What a great place to stay. When we were driving here, we were in the middle of no where for so long, with no phone service and nothing around. We thought we were going to be eating soup out of a can from the back of our truck, as there were no towns, no restaurants around. But when we got to Sugarloaf area, we were pleasantly surprised, as it is it’s own little ski village (in the middle of no where) with many restaurants, shops, chalets, inns, etc. many of them remaining open in the off season (summer). Thank you to my sister Ann who found Sugarloaf Inn for us, she met Amy who works here many years ago, and when she saw that I was looking for a place near here, she suggested it. Sitting on our balcony, I can envision what the winter looks like here – bustling with people and fun, skiing, eating, drinking, music, etc. Maybe I have to come back one winter day!
