So even though Italy wins…..as our next big big trip (in Spring 2026!), we look forward to some big trips within Ontario and Canada in 2024 and 2025!
This summer 2024, we are so looking forward to travelling to the East Coast. I am hoping to hear from all of you who have any suggestions about things to see and do when you see our itinerary:
Itinerary
- Souris, PEI – 3 days!
- Lunenburg, Nova Scotia area – 4 days!
- Digby, Nova Scotia area – 3 days!
- Amsterdam & Rotterdam, New York area – a few days before coming home
Route
We decided we wanted to stay far away from Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, so we found a great route going though Maine, USA. A childhood friend of Bart’s lives in New Brunswick and we have kept in touch, so we will stop and spend one night with them which we are looking forward to catching up!

Things to Do!
We have a few things schedule and planned already:
– A cycle day along the coast in PEI
– Tour on the Bluenose out of Lunenburg
– The International Tattoo in Halifax (maybe a stop at Peggy’s Cove on the way, and a visit to Pier 21 when we are in Halifax)
– The Digby Neck and Islands – a whale watching tour!
– I hear there are lots of wineries and breweries in the Digby area, so we plan to tour them and enjoy them!! Any favorites we should know about?
– would like to spend a bit of time in Mahone Bay (last time we just drove by) – it looks like they have some nice local restaurants so maybe for lunch or dinner.

When we went to PEI in 2011, we only stayed 2 nights so didn’t spend a lot of time there. We went to Ann of Green Gables, Cavendish, spent a half day at PEI National Park on the beach, and had a seafood church basement dinner. It was lovely, but the area was very commercialized. I remember thinking how the author Lucy Montgomery would be upset to see a theme park built up around the Ann of Green Gables property.
At that time, I said I want to come back and spend some time on the north eastern part (see the red below), visiting some small villages, eating local seafood, cycle the area and take in the views, and just mix in with the local people. And we will do all of that!! An old friend of Bart’s lives in Souris and has offered for us to camp out on his property!

We were hoping to drive the Cabot Trail and go to Fortress of Louisbourg, but we don’t want to cram too much in and move around too much. We did do these things in 2011 when we were in the East Coast with our kids, and they were both highlights for me.

Who?

It will be Bart and I and our tent. Yep we are tenting it! (for most of it) I am excited to not be pulling the trailer so that I can share in the driving! As I mentioned we are staying a night with a friend in New Brunswick, staying with a friend for 3 nights in PEI. Also……we are happy that our friends Bob and Tracy will be joining us in PEI, Lunenburg and Digby area, and Debbie and Hank will join us for a few days in Amsterdam & Rotterdam, New York. When I saw that New York had these two towns named after the ones in the Netherlands, I was like “I have to go there”. We found a nice campground called Arrowhead Marina and RV Park which is right in the middle of them.
What else should we do?
Share your favorites in the East Coast. When you look at our itinerary, what else should we do??!!!
We have all of our accommodations booked except one. On the way, we plan to get an AirBnB or hotel near Kingfield, Maine. I know nothing of this area and am hoping that someone can suggest a place to stop-over.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
