Koln (english Cologne) – April 21st

We arrived to Cologne around 9 am and got a nice view of the cathedral while eating breakfast.

We were always in the back of the bus. Our cruise director Wez came to sit in the back to keep us under control. Lol

We took so many pictures and heard so much this day that I was overwhelmed when I went to do this post. The pictures are a bit scattered and the cathedral pics keep randomly getting slipped in…..as this was the most spectacular thing we saw!!!!

There are 12 Romanesque churches in cologne. They were rebuilt after the war. They are older than the cathedral. They started building the Cathedral in 1248. It is about 533 steps to (almost) the top.

Cologne is the 4th biggest town in Germany with 1 million people.

Henry Ford opened a Ford plant here before WW 2. They are a huge employer in Cologne.

No 4711 is the cologne that was started here – some of you may remember it as the one that your mother or grandmother would wear. It is called 4711 as that was his house number.

In WW2 70 percent of Cologne was destroyed. 89 percent of the old town. Some of the windows of the cathedral were removed and put in mines outside of cologne during the war to save them from getting destroyed by the bombing.

Inside the pink church – the next pic. This is the only church in Cologne that was not bombed in world war 2.
We met up with Bobs cousin Thomas and his wife Michaela as they live near Cologne. We ate lunch at Peters Brauhaus (behind us).
Cheers in the square. Finally we can sit out and enjoy a patio!
