Cruising through castles & Koblenz Germany – April 20th

Even though it was rainy and chilly we sat outside at the front of the boat so we could see all the castles through the Unesco site Rhine Valley. Wez our tour guide narrated and gave us the history of all the castles. Wow so many. We passed about 20 in a few hours – about 20 km in total. So incredible. Thanks to Tracy, Bart and Andrea who took the castle pics. There may be doubles (oops!) and even though they shared the history of each one, I don’t remember! It is crazy to think the Germany has over 25,000 castles. We went into Marksburg Castle built in the 13th century, which is the only one not touched by the war. Enjoy these pictures! And if you ever have a chance to visit this part of the Rhine, you will not be disappointed!

Our group was one of the only diehards who stayed outside (where you get the best views)
Marksburg Castle!!!
The fields – steep fields are full of grape vines. Crazy to think how they farm at that angle.
This was a toll house for boats on an island in Rhine from the early 14th century. There is a dungeon in the basement.
so gorgeous!
The walk way into the castle!
The view from Marksburg castle!
Marksburg castle kitchen.
Bob and his friend! These little stone faces used to be in a chapel that is no longer there so they repurposed them elsewhere in the castle.
They displayed the castle weapons.
What a great tour! We learned so much! And if I remembered it all I would share with you but I wish I took some notes!
The boys!!
A spectacular view from the castle!
Do you know what this is? In the day you would not want to be standing underneath this at the back of the castle. Hmm….or you might get something stinky plop on your head.
Yep! The bathroom. It was a great luxury to have a bathroom in the 13th century.
I just had to share so many pictures since the view was so gorgeous! And you can only imagine as pictures only do justice so much!
Either they were short in medieval times (which we learned they are) or the doors are short!
Steve and Andrea! This was the first gate of 4 to get to the castle. Look at the size and thickness!!

Koblenz Germany! We went into the church in the corner.

The rose window in a church in Koblenz.
These were pieces of the Berlin Wall that was put up in 1953 and came down in 1989. It divided East and West Germany from Russian occupation
Church in Koblenz. The bells went on for like 15 minutes!!
Not sure which church this was but I know it was in Koblenz Germany. We went into so many. Every church in Europe is open to the public.
The girls!!! and the dude in the background spitting water!!
Le Pouce made by Cesar is a huge thumb sculpture. It was created as a tribute to the mischievous youth of Koblenz. Thumbs up!!
Saint Castor Basilica in Koblenz.
Such intricate carvings in the churches. This one is in the basilica in Koblenz.
The food on the boat is gourmet!!
Cheers to another great day!!! Steve and Andrea were smarter than us this night and didn’t stay up until after midnight.
