Door to door from Hamilton to our accommodation in Basel was 18 hours. One limo to Toronto, KLM to Amsterdam, a long walk through Schipol Airport, Germany Air to Switzerland, Bus 50 to the Basel train station, and Tram 8 to Marktplatz, where we have an apartment rented. A long but an exciting day to travel as we think about our next 2 weeks of vacation. Bart and I are travelling with our friends Bob and Tracy and Steve and Andrea.

It was a bit rainy when we arrived Old Basel around 11 a.m. We found a restaurant around the corner from our accommodations where we had a cheers and a bite to eat as we could not check in until 1 pm.

Our apartment was on the third floor and here is the view from our window. We couldn’t be any closer to the centre of Old Basel. We are right in Marktplatz which is the centre of of old Basel!

We didn’t have anything planned other than check out the city. Basel is much bigger than I thought. Just the old town itself is big. We were also very close to the Rhine, so we walked there and along the river, and we could see where the river boats were parked.

I would say we are all looking pretty good after staying up all night.

The Munster church was quite spectacular!

The original cathedral was built between 1019 and 1500 in Romanesque and Gothic styles.

The Basel Town Hall is a 500 year old building dominating the Marktplatz in Basel. We can actually see it from one of our apartment windows. When we arrived they had a market with veggies and breads and meats and cheeses, etc. we actually ended up getting some wraps for dinner later that day.

Bart and I went or a walk in the evening. There are many University buildings around. When I googled I found out that the University of Basel is the oldest in Switzerland.

The building in front of us is our apartment. The 3rd floor. The blinds are closed and our friends are sleeping. The second floor was a restaurant owned by Ivan who owns our apartment. We couldn’t have picked a better location to stay.
