Hindeloopen is a beautiful village on the sea! So many restaurants and little shops, and beautiful views throughout the town. We wanted to go to one shop before leaving so we waited until 10 a.m. The shop was filled with things from Fryslan, including all the painted art pieces.
We were determined to get it right today so we copied down all the numbers we needed to travel from Hindelooopen to Lemmer. We gave them to Willy, Albert, Henny and Harry as well – our cousins that will meet us today. And we started out getting lost again. lol.
With a little help from some walkers and farmers we made our way to Kaudam. and then we followed our numbers and we went through many small villages. We stopped in Oudemirdum as Janet’s bike had lost power. So we sat on a patio in the middle of town. We called the bike shop in Amsterdam and they told us it is a common issue, and to play around with the sensor on the spoke and take the battery in and out. We tried and it worked for a little and then stopped. Poor Janet had to go the rest of the way with no battery assistance. Debbie and I agreed that it was a good thing it was her and not us! Lol.
It took us a bit to connect up with the cousins. they were cycling from Lemmer, and of course we gave them an extra number which sent them a different path than us. But finally we connected and we cycled the rest if the way to Lemmer together.
We found a bike shop and they fixed some loose wires and hopefully Janet will have power tomorrow. And then we sat and had some drinks and dutch snacks at the side if the canal. Wow what a gorgeous village with so many restaurants and patios. Roanne and Tom joined us as well. It was so great to sit and chat and laugh and enjoy the sunshine! I think it got to a high of 20.
We then went to our apartment we rented. A nice place around the corner from the centre of town. We met our host Betsy and she had a garage for our bikes which was nice. Once again we have nice accommodations. We have a 3 bedroom apartment.
We met the family for dinner and had great food with great company! We received some worst – from Drenthe, Grinigen, and Fryslan. So just like Koek (cake) it looks like different regions also have their own dried sausage. Lekker!
We had another great day in the Netherlands. Albert now has me thinking of doing the Elfstedentocht – the eleven cities bicycle tour which is 240 km. They have been doing it since 1912. Albert has done it 10 times. They only take 35,000 riders so you have to apply, but Albert would maybe give me his ticket since he gets invited each year but no longer does it. Hmm……a challenge worth considering! You have to ride the 240 in one day, rain or shine!
It was a great evening in Lemmer and so nice to spend time with Albert and Willy, Harry and Henny, and Roanne and Tom.
We cycled 40 km today.
