What a beautiful place Enkhuizen. We stayed at the mist prominent house in the town. It was a top notch B & B! Ingrid our host had the entire place decorated with so much thought, and we had everything we needed. We had a beautiful view from our room. We were right by the harbour, train station, and ferry pick up. They have s gorgeous backyard with a pond and inviting patio. Again we wish we could spend more time here.
Ingrid had the perfect dutch breakfast for us. Every morning we have enough to make a bun with cheese and/ or meat and a fruit and pack into our cooler bag to have for lunch.
We made sure that we were at the Zuiderzee museum for 10 am when they opened. We soent 2 hours here but could have spent much longer there. They had both indoor and outdoor things, and it gave you an idea of what life was like around the former Zuiderzee, particularly as a child. They had a ferry that we could take back to the the centre of town which took about 10 minutes.
We already had our bikes packed up in Ingrid’s garage, and so we were ready to get in our way. This is a very short day of cycling for us. We paid about 15 euros to take the ferry with our bikes across the Ijsselmeer, about 25 kilometres to Stavoren. It took about 80 minutes. It went by quick as we reminisced about our trip so far and had some good laughs.
What a surprise we had when we arrived in Stavoren. Some of my family were there to meet us ((from Bart’s Mom’s side) – Vonnetje and Inne, and Oom Hans and Tante Ineke. WOW!! A very nice surprise. I was feeling sad that I would not get to the south of Netherlands to see them, so was very happy that they came to us. They said if Sonya can cycle around our country, we can take 2 hours to go and see her. They were staying in an Airbnb of a friend in Molkwerum (where Bart’s mom was born and raised). We had coffee and lekker koek (unique to Molkwerum). We walked around town, stopping to see Bart’s Pake’s house. It is a beautiful little village on the sea, but too bad that years ago all businesses (stores, etc), schools, have all closed due to lack of work. But it is so nice to visit. When we were coming across the Ijsselmeer it starting raining, and even heavier when we got to Stavoren. We cycled the 5 km in the rain, but by the time we left Molkwerum the rain had stopped.
We arrived in Hindeloopen around 4:30 p.m. I have been here before and it is such a lovely village. It is famous because of the Hindeloopen art and hindeloopen costume. We have some wood painted pieces at home from Hindeloopen.
We have an entire house rented. We had trouble finding something in this area, and thankfully the owner agreed for us to stay one night (as he had a minimum 3 night stay). We wandered through town, found the grocer to get our breakfast items for tomorrow. After our happy hour we went and had a late dinner at a restaurant around the corner, Sudersee. We had fresh fish – 3 kinds! and all kinds of lekker sides that came with it – red and white cabbage. So so good! After dinner the owner Piet took us to his tasting room of home brewed liquors. Yum. And we could buy some to take home.
Again it would be so nice to stay here longer as well. I can imagine how busy it gets here in the summer months.
So we only cycled 10 km today, unless you count the 25 km across the water. But it was 10 km in rain! We had a great day! and a great highlight for me was seeing Ome Hans, Tante Ineke, Inne and Vonnetje. Fryslan is so lovely and we are looking forward to our cycle tomorrow to Lemmer.
